This vintage ring is crafted in 18 karat gold and set with a substantial smoky quartz that defines the design. The stone features a softly domed profile with a subtly faceted top, giving the surface a rounded yet structured presence and creating depth within its warm brown tones. The cut allows light to move gently across the quartz, revealing layered reflections rather than sharp brilliance.
The quartz is held in a sculptural gold setting that wraps closely around the stone and flows seamlessly into the shank. The band is wide and smoothly contoured, tapering slightly toward the back for comfort while retaining its visual weight.
The overall form brings to mind a cartridge, adding a quiet sense of force to its otherwise soft presence. On the hand, the ring feels large, soft, and bold, all at the same time.
Birger Haglund was a Swedish goldsmith and silversmith trained in Sweden, who began his career in Stockholm before moving to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1948, where he established his own workshop. He returned to Sweden in the early 1950s and continued working independently, creating jewellery and objects marked by strong craftsmanship and a restrained modernist language.
